Hâle Utar
Hâle Utar is an Associate Professor and Sidney Meyer Endowed Chair in International Economics at Grinnell College. She obtained her Ph.D. in economics from Pennsylvania State University. Before joining Grinnell, she held professorships at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Bielefeld University, Germany. Her research interests include the microeconomic impacts of international trade, globalization, and technical change. She has examined the role of import competition, volatility, and credit frictions in industrial productivity in developing countries and the rise of China on export-oriented developing country industries (specifically the evolution of Mexican Maquiladoras after China entered the WTO). Her recent work has focused on the ways a swift increase in low-wage country competition has transformed the manufacturing economy in high-income regions. This work examines in detail how industries, firms, individual workers, and the labor markets respond and adjust when exposed to such competition. Her publications in academic journals include Review of Economics and Statistics, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, International Economic Review, and Journal of Development Economics.
